Compared with 10 years ago, we are seeing more ticks and more cases of Lyme disease in dogs.  While the highest risk area in Ontario is in the eastern part of the province around the 1000 Islands, tick numbers are on the rise in our area as well.  Highest risk areas closer to home are Long Point and Wainfleet.  Dogs who spend time in long grassy or wooded areas are at higher risk of tick exposure.  Symptoms of Lyme Disease in dogs include joint tenderness and fever and tend to appear 2-5 months after being bit by an infected tick.  Treatment tends to work very well but for dogs at high risk of exposure to ticks a vaccination for Lyme Disease is also available.  We would be happy to discuss if the vaccination is right for your pet at your next visit.
