We thought we would share some information from an article that was recently published in the Hamilton Spectator about hypoallergenic dog breeds.  The author is a board certified allergist and immunologist in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Based on recent reseach, “hypoallergenic” breeds are more of a “myth” than reality.  People are allergic to a protein found in dog saliva and urine, called Can f1.  The author writes “the protein sticks to the dead, dry flakes from your pet’s skin, which is dander.  An animal’s fur is not the source of the allergen.”  She did mention that certain dogs seem to less of a problem for certain people but it’s not directly related to the breed.
